The celebration/fundraiser for Bernie Worrell, the wonderful wizard of WOO who’s battling 4th stage lung cancer and prostate cancer was a hugh success!  Thank you to The BRC Team, the Sweet Relief Team, BLJ World Wide, God’s Love We Deliver, Jonathan Demme for the Stop Making Sense/Ricki & The Flash footage, Berklee College of Music’s ‘The Record’ Team, Tony Pallagrosi of the Stone Pony and specially to all of the ‘Superb Guest Artists’ on the stage April 4th.  A major ‘Thank You’ to those who wanted to be there but couldn’t and sent ‘amazing’ musical instruments for the live and online auction, (Santana, Flea, Moog, Bob Gruen, The Rolling Stones, Pigtronix, Fender Guitars, Chris Frantz, Tina Weymouth, Dennis Chambers),you made the funds raised for Bernie even sweeter.  Thank you to Mayor Ras Baraka for the ‘Proclamation’ proclaiming Bernie’s contribution to music and the music industy.  To the Stephen Colbert Show for showing Bernie & P-Funk ‘air time love’ the day of show.  The hundreds of members of the press who helped to promote the event, the volunteers supporting the event and the thousands of ‘Funkateers’ who brought their funky selves to the fundraiser and those who checked in online, you made a thought, a dream come true!

The goal was to raise funds for Worrell’s health and living expenses as he fights Stage 4 lung cancer and prostate cancer.  The even honored Worrell for all he’s given to popular culture through music and raised funds to attempt to cover gaps not adequately paid by way of health care limitations, royalties, samples, licensing, and the like—a side effect of being a pioneering artist whose impact and influence spans back to when he started composing music in the 1950s.

Notes from Mamafunk:

From Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ to ‘The World of Captain Beefheart’ straight to a show with the Mosaic Project, Whew!  With more challenging projects up my every changing sleeve, stay tuned my peeps!

I first met Captain Beefheart at The Bottom Line, a club in the village in NY when he and the Magic Band altered minds including mine and thus began my exploration and love for Captain Beefheart’s lyrics and music.  A one off performance of ‘UPON THE OH MY’ with Gary Lucas on guitar during a tribute to Captain Beefheart led by JesseKrakow was the catalyst for my performing with the Metropole Orkestra in Amsterdam tomorrow night, FEB. 17 @ 8:30 @ PARADISO.  CO KLOET (really cool guy), invited me on GARY LUCAS’ suggestion, thank’s Gary, your cool too, we do our ‘glimmer twins’ dark sun glasses thing & you play a mean slide guitar!  See all those who can make it at the Trout Mask Replica Bash!

 PROGRAM:

Join us as Nona HendryxReno and Nelson George examine the nature of identity pushed to the margins. They’ll question the world out loud with a profound sense of love and friendship, call for recognition, hold the world accountable for its actions, and celebrate the regenerative spirit of humanity.

In the spirit of two fisted singer songwriters such as Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Betty Davis, Odetta, Nikki Giovanni, and others, Carl Hancock Rux presents a rare performance by legendary singer/songwriter, Nona Hendryx. With a career spanning six decades of sound & style evolution paralleling the changing times, from bluebelle doo-wop to brill building revolutionary rock poetics to space age new wave goddess, Hendryx morphs into yet another incarnation.

Writer/filmmaker Nelson George pays tribute to poet Gil Scott-Heron and introduces a short film by Rux focusing on the impact of Scott-Heron’s radical political vision and his transformative contribution to activism, connecting social movements rooted deeply in civil rights struggles from integration to the exploitation of mine workers, anti-nuclear war and apartheid protests as well as Scott-Heron’s own political disillusionment and return to freedom struggles, all while impacting poets, musicians and the community at large, decrying a true America for real Americans.

Brutally honest comedian, political monologist Citizen Reno tackles America with an incendiary wit and a machine-gun delivery in a rant that expands from the neighborhood to the nation, reflecting on the ruins of 9/11, and the Ground-Zero guerrilla puzzle of voodoo patriotism, with scalding assessments of everyone from George W. Bush to Larry King to Donald Trump and the Obama/Osama drama.

*SkinDiver coming to Washington D.C  for Arena Stage.  Arena Stage is helping to develop a new musical, written by Nona Hendryx (Blue, Labelle) and Charles Randolph-Wright (Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies, Blue, Porgy and Bess & Through the Night). Fusing explosive rock music with science fiction and suspense, Skindiver explores a world where technology reins supreme and leads humans and machines to manipulation, masquerade and murder. When Makeeda, the acclaimed “Queen Of The Web” an internet ‘Oprah,’ is imprisoned with accusations of killing her co workers with a computer code, psychologist Marta must travel down the rabbit hole to learn the true story about the woman behind the infamous web persona. What she discovers is a terrifying realization into her own world as she fights to bring Makeeda to justice.  Stay tuned for the Arrival and Opening of Skindiver in the future.  For questions about this project, e-mail, Nona Hendryx at nonahendryx.com or nonahendryx@yahoo.com or Amrita Mangus at amangus@arenastage.org.

CORRECTION! Skindiver is in workshop mode for now and not ready for my discerning music fans!  When we’re ready my fans will get an early heads up!  Stay tuned!
