Harlem Stage’s wildly successful music series Uptown Nights returns for a third year, presenting cutting-edge live music in a vibrant club setting that revives the days when Harlem was the place to see progressive, hip, new music. Two new editions of the politically charged “WeDaPeoples Cabaret” - originally created by the late poet/performer Sekou Sundiata - kick off Uptown Nights in September. The first night of “WeDaPeoples Cabaret” is curated by Samita Sinha and features an engaging night of performances in unexpected, intimate formats. The second night is curated by Carl Hancock Rux and stars legendary singer Nona Hendryx, monologuist Renohttp://www.citizenreno.com/, and author/producer Nelson George.

Hey! We’re mashing up music Apr. 25 @ The Rockwood Music Hall!

My students from The Clive Davis Recorded Music School + an invited guest will be mixing and mashing music for 2 hours, non stop!  Rock, Hip Hop, Pop, Folk Rock, Electronica and R&B.  Come out and support them and me if you’re home alone, out and about  or just a music fan who love supporting new artists.  It’s kinda like ‘UnFiltered’ but ‘Slightly Flitered’!

ROCK & ROLL FANTASY CAMP was another amazing musical experience.  Starting with 5 people I’d never met and given the task of whipping them in to a Rock Band in 3 days, prepping to record 2 songs in 3 hours in a major recording studio and a performance at B.B Kings Blues Club in front of a sold out audience!  No pressure!

‘StreetMeat’ the band Rob Leon (gtr. & voc), Phoebe Leon (gtr. & voc), scott Lucia (drums), frasier Abbott (bass & bagpipes), **I’m missing 2 names will add them soon!

THE STRUGGLES OF THE WORLD…if interested, have a look, do what you can to help heal the world.  http://revolutionaryfrontlines.wordpress.com/

London’s buzzing with artists of all kinds and I had an amazing time hopping around London last night viewing some of the fantastic and not so fantastic creations by famous, looking to become famous and desperately trying not to appear famous artists.  Traci Emin, Kelly Walker and a host of others I won’t try to name or spell correctly because I’m not that knowledgable.  Thelma from the Studio Museum in Harlem and I chatted at the Kelly Walker exhibition, Carole and Hamish McAlpine helped to organize a charity auction for a hospital in Bhopal, the Bhopal medical Appeal, so they can continue their work helping the people effected.  25 of the world’s most important artists have all decorated a traditional water carrying pot which will be auctioned off by Phillip de Pury.  We hurried to the Tate Modern for Ai Weiwei, one of China’s leading Conceptual artists and an outspoken cultural and social commentators’ exhibition of Sunflower Seeds it is made up of millions of small works, each apparently identical, but actually unique. There was another stop on our Art Hop but hunger got the best of us so we picked up and artist friend of Charlotte’s Harland Miller (he created a water pot that actually had water flowing through it a plays a Tom Jones song!) and headed for The Groucho Club in Soho.  That’s where we discussed art, life, if pigeons are birds and birds that fly for 3 years without touching the earth (so Charlotte said) chowed down on Dover Sole, salad and NO DESERT/PUDDING! A fun evening but sadly, no music!  Well there was a dj at on place but it was so low it was like no music.

Went to a new restaurant in Soho, The Dean Street Townhouse, owned by the Soho Club owners and the food was fantastic!  I had desert/pudding tonight, I was a little apprehensive cause I ordered ‘sticky toffee pudding’ and if its not good, its a waste of calories!  It was Delicious and worth the calories!

More Art Fair fun to come tomorrow and Thursday…then off to Paris and Nancy France for the 1st Les Ethnics show.

Fantastic 4 Days @ Berklee College of Music in Boston!  Smells like teen & post teen spirit to me!

I want to thank the President & faculty, the wonderful lunch and a very special time!

The Berklee Ensemble & Music Theatre departments rocked the 5 songs & dialogue excerpts from ‘Skindiver’ the Rock Opera Charles R. Wright and I have been working on for what seems like forever.  So good to hear it performed a young group of talented actors and musicians; Ashley Cook (Makeeda), Cleveland Jones (Powell/Father), Carissa Scudieri (Marta), Miguel Milla (TC), Wil Viozzi, (Dan/Ensemble Chip), David Jiles (Ensemble Chip), Devon Frampton (Ensemble Chip), Taylor Washington (Ensemble Chip), Jiri MD/Piano, Coran Hendley, Drummer, Kyle Miles, Bass, Yasser Tejeda, Guitar and Chad Selph, Synth & Keysby, Directed by Rebecca Perricone and drum professor/musician, Terri Lyne Carrington

Sitting in on music business class; Principles of Business Management, stopping By Prince Charles’ music production class, checking out the Black Music History Center, a must see if you’re even visiting Berklee.  I was ask to give a Master Class in ‘Developing/Exploring Your Stage Persona’ workshop which allowed me to share so much of what I’ve learned over my many years of performance.

TOKYO JAZZ FEST & BLUE NOTE, NOTES!

Somebody said “she autta be arrested fo funk”!  It was other worldly and beautiful at the same time. The Tokyo Jazz Fest & Blue Note shows were as amazing for me to watch as to be part of with the 5 fantastic musicians; Esperanza, Ingrid, Tineke, Helen and our fearless leader, the always amazing drummer, Terri Lyne Carrington and the baby of the group, 22 yr old Brazilian singer Patricia, all on the ‘Mosaic’ CD (released in Japan).

http://www.terrilynecarrington.net/

There are many more fabulous female musicians on the CD and hopefully we’ll get to play with the entire group soon.

Oh What fun we had in Chi-town!  Great people, fantastic food, and Inspiring food for my soul ‘MUSIC’ and everyone else in the park.  Frank McComb, lit the night up to start, then Esperanza Spaulding enchanted and boogled the minds of many with Terri Lyne Carrington driving & caressing the drums, Dan heating up the percussion, Richardholding down mo bass than should be allowed, Mitch coloring w/strings & synths & Jef Lee Johnson painting with his guitar w/two heaven sent backing vocalist.  Oleta Adams, was magical and like all great vocalist, she only gets better!  Ronny Drayton and I joined the musical mayhem for funk up closing set and boy did Chicago ‘Sweat’!  All for a great organization working to save and teach our children, ‘Little Black Pearls’.  Monica Haslip deserves ‘all that heaven will allow’!  xoxo

  • Stay tuned for the Arrival and Opening of Skindiver in the future.  For questions about this project, e-mail, Nona Hendryx at nonahendryx.com or nonahendryx@yahoo.com or Amrita Mangus at amangus@arenastage.org.

Soooooo…..The Music Haven Concert Series, July 25th  ‘Was Fun-k’!  Have to say ‘thank you’ to Sara Hill, Mark Craig & Mona Golub for a funktastic evening.  It felt so good to feel the good vibes from you and the fans took it to another level.  The fans looked like a Benetton Advertisment!

The Visual AIDS event was a huge success!  The organizers raise more money this year than previously and in this economy that’s REAL SUCCESS!  More artists living with HIV will have support to create and their experience to share with the world.  John Kelly is tremendous and lovely, Joey a Changeling extraordinaire, Joseph Keckler (my new tweeple friend) super talented, Mary Ellen Carroll and I are planning a project together, and what’s a gay event without drag?  Not Fabulous! Christopher Tanner’s hair would have totally blocked out Dolly Parton!

*I dedicated this action to the memory of Lena Horne.  LOVELY LENA!  Your family, friends, fans & I will miss you, your smile, your spirit, your voice and of course your beauty! Sweet sleep, beauty.

I was the ‘Host’ for the evening!  Please continue to support Visual AIDS, follow the link below if you want to donate, ect.

We draw from the deep history of art activism, as with our Red Ribbon Project and Day With(out) Art. Visual AIDS promotes art that is public, inclusive and accessible. We believe art that takes risks promotes and encourages reflection, dialogue, and action.
